Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Climate Action Plan Goal

Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 90% by 2045 compared to 2014 levels with interim milestones of 25% reduction by 2025 and 60% by 2035.

Updates

The City is currently working with Cascadia Consulting to complete the 2023 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory. The final report will be available soon and posted on this website.

Overview

A greenhouse gas inventory is a comprehensive way to measure greenhouse gases emitted by an organization or geographic area over a specific period of time. It identifies emission sources and quantities to support tracking, reporting, and reduction efforts.

The City has worked with Cascadia Consulting to complete a 2014 and 2018 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory to quantify the amount of pollution produced from the Island.

The report found that a majority of community GHG emissions came from:

  1. The electric utility's sources of electricity for use in homes and commercial buildings and gasoline*
  2. Fuel use for on-road vehicles
  3. Air travel
