King Tides

It is anticipated that the water levels reached now during a king tide will be the water level reached at high tide on an average day.

King tides bring unusually high-water levels, and they can cause local tidal flooding. Over time, sea level rise is causing high tides to reach higher and extend further inland than in the past. King tides preview how sea level rise will affect coastal areas.

Tidal flooding from king tides can occur in some areas around Bainbridge Island starting around +13 feet above mean low water (MLLW), as measured at the NOAA Seattle Tide Station

The NOAA Seattle Tide Station allows users to observe what tide level causes flooding in your area and monitor the NOAA Seattle Tide Station for real-time tide water measurements (assume flood levels will be even higher during windy storm events). Learn more about king tides and anticipated king tide events using the Sea Grant Washington King Tides Calendar.

If possible, move vehicles to higher ground before flooding begins and wash your vehicle down with fresh water after driving through salt water. Turn off electrical breakers if flood waters might enter your crawlspace or structure. Elevate anything at home that could float away in the water and cause water quality degradation, such as paint cans, automotive supplies, lawn chemicals, etc. Secure small boats and other items stored outside that could easily float away.

Additionally, follow these safety precautions:

  • Do not walk through flood water if possible. It is a health hazard.
  • If you do need to walk through flood waters, follow good hygiene practices and wash your hands, clothes, and pets afterwards.
  • Do not drive through flooded areas - it is dangerous and can damage your vehicle. Find an alternative route. Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
  • Boaters should be aware that high tides cause lower clearance under bridges - check the tide before leaving the dock.
